Cannabis indica is an annual plant in the Cannabaceae family. A putative species of the genus Cannabis, it is typically distinguished from Cannabis Sativa. Cannabis Indica was first classified by French was made by French biologist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck in 1785. He made the classification using specimens observed in India. Indica varieties tend to be shorter in stature with more leaves than their sativa counterparts.Their leaves tend to be shorter and broader than those of sativa strains.
Indica strains tend to have higher levels of THC relative to their CBD content. The effects of Indica varieties to be more physical and less psychoactive than sativas. Generally, indica strains such as Northern Lights and Purple Kush are said to have more of a “body buzz” type of effect rather than a cerebral “high” typified by sativa strains. However, there is now significant controversy surrounding the way strains are classified and even if the classification itself is valid. Due to the amount of cross-breeding carried out by humans, these physical characteristics are now not sufficient to characterize a cannabis strain.
There are biochemically distinct strains of Cannabis, but the sativa/indica distinction as commonly applied in the lay literature is total nonsense and an exercise in futility. One cannot in any way currently guess the biochemical content of a given Cannabis plant based on its height, branching, or leaf morphology. The degree of interbreeding/hybridization is such that only a biochemical assay tells a potential consumer or scientist what is really in the plant. It is essential that future commerce allows complete and accurate cannabinoid and terpenoid profiles to be available.
Currently there are more than 6000 cannabis strains that have been bred from approximately 60 naturally occurring landrace strains that were the originally naturally evolved varieties comprising both the sativa and indica varieties. Traditionall, the indica strains from South East Aisa were cultivated to make charras or hashish.
