Sunset Beach Park

Sunset Beach is located close to the West End near the Burrard Street Bridge and Vancouver International Hostel. It is close to the Vancouver Aquatic Centre and is connected to the False Creek Ferry pier. It is a public park in downtown Vancouver that is quite popular. The land on which the park is built was bought by the city from businessman George C. Reifel in 1941.

The Reifel family have built some of Vancouver’s most treasured landmarks, including the Commodore Ballroom, Vogue Theatre. The Vancouver Art Gallery was built on land donated by the Reifel family and the Reifel Bird Sanctuary was established by them in 1972.

The Reifels made their money from the trading of liquor. The family owned four breweries and two distilleries in the early days, and also set up a network of ships to supply liquor to the west coast of the US during U.S prohibition. This historical tie to prohibition is interesting as the park is now the site of an annual protest against cannabis prohibition. It is a great place to visit after a trip to WEEDS, the top marijuana dispensary in downtown Vancouver. It has been the site of the annual 4/20 celebrations multiple since 2016, whether the city blesses it or not.

The fate of one of the country’s biggest pot “protestivals” is in question with B.C. announcing the details of its legal marijuana regulations. Vancouver’s controversial annual 4/20 event, deemed a protest by activists and a party by critics, moved from the Vancouver Art Gallery to Sunset Beach in 2016.
